In the past two decades, Zhejiang's centenarian population has skyrocketed from just 547 in 2003 to more than 4,000 today, Tide News reported on Oct 15.

By 2009, the count had surpassed 1,000 and doubled to over 2,200 by 2015. By 2020, the tally exceeded 4,000, firmly placing Zhejiang among China's longevity leaders. Cities like Hangzhou and Wenzhou lead the way, while Taizhou boasts the highest density of centenarians.

Regional shifts in cities like Quzhou and Lishui stand out. In Quzhou, the number of centenarians has increased by over 400 percent since 2007, while Lishui saw an astonishing twelvefold jump in the same period, transforming these areas into unexpected hubs of healthy aging.

Experts link this surge to a combination of Zhejiang's rapid economic rise, environmental improvements, enhanced healthcare, and a forward-thinking elderly care system. Prosperity has reshaped not just wallets but also lifestyles, fostering a society where health is a priority.

Zhejiang has taken elderly care seriously, expanding its facilities and services dramatically. By 2023, the province had over 1,600 elderly care centers and more than 230,000 beds. The dining system for seniors has grown even faster, with over 10,000 community meal centers serving seniors across the region.

Another unique factor is the longevity subsidies. Since 2011, Zhejiang has been issuing monthly allowances to residents over 80, a practical nod to both age and contribution. This program now benefits over 1.8 million people and reinforces a culture where aging is seen not as a burden, but as an achievement.
