Community gyms established in Quzhou to boost public fitness
Since launching its community gym initiative in 2020, Kaihua county in Quzhou, Zhejiang province, has built 45 "People's Gyms", with four located in urban areas and 41 spread across rural villages.
Urban gyms are strategically positioned on ground-floor, street-facing locations with high foot traffic and quiet surroundings, while rural gyms are set up near popular gathering spots for residents.
Despite their compact size, each gym is well-equipped, with designated spaces for cardio, strength training, table tennis, dance, and even board games, catering to a wide range of fitness preferences. The gyms are stocked with popular equipment like treadmills, rowing machines, stationary bikes, and strength trainers.
These community gyms also feature local fitness instructors, like Lou Jianzhi at the Aotan Gym, where he assists residents in using exercise bikes and other equipment. These trainers are sports enthusiasts selected from local clubs and associations, responsible for facility management, guiding exercise routines, and promoting fitness awareness.
According to the Kaihua bureau of culture, tourism, and sports, the county plans to pilot a market-driven management model in select gyms to enhance resources and expand services, aiming to provide diverse and accessible fitness options.
