Quzhou caviar makes its way back to Europe

Quzhou Xunlong Aquatic Food Technology Co Ltd, a company that produces caviar, faced a major challenge when the European Union (EU) changed its import rules and blocked its products at two airports in France and Germany.

The company relied on the EU market for 40 percent of its total exports in 2022.

With the help of the Quzhou commerce bureau, the company appealed to the EU Commission and communicated with relevant authorities in China and Europe. The General Administration of Customs in China also negotiated with the EU departments and provided expert opinions on the new regulation.

After a month and a half of hard work, the EU agreed to revise its regulations and restore China's export qualifications. The company's first batch of 508 kilograms of caviar cleared customs at Berlin Airport, becoming the first Chinese caviar to return to the EU market after the technical rejections.

"This not only helped the company recover its annual losses, but also prompted the EU to modify its caviar product import rules and open up a channel for exporting EU fish by-products across the country," said an official of the Quzhou commerce bureau.

Since September, the company has been producing caviar non-stop, and the monthly processing volume has exceeded 30 tons, which is unprecedented.

Xia Yongtao, the company's executive deputy general manager, said that the company achieved a 20-percent increase in performance in 2022 and expected to exceed $20 million in export sales this year.
