Grapefruit industry boosts economy in Changshan

In Changshan county, Quzhou, Zhejiang province, 116,000 mu of grapefruit is being grown, and 100,000 people are engaged in the growing, production and sale of the fruit, increasing farmers' incomes by 560 million yuan ($77.85 million).

The total output value of grapefruit in Changshan is expected to exceed 3.5 billion yuan in 2022.

The county has developed an entire industrial chain around the fruit, including growing, research and development, processing, sales and tourism.

Grapefruit plantations in the county such as Youxianggu and Taigongshan have integrated agriculture with tourism, attracting more than 500,000 tourists every year.

Meanwhile, the county has been focusing on the deep processing of the fruit.

The falling fruits have been used to make a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, bringing in additional income of nearly 900 yuan per mu for farmers.

In addition, more than 70 products such as grapefruit juice, grapefruit paste and grapefruit essential oil have been developed from the fruit in recent years. The proportion of fruit deep processing has increased from 30 percent to 45 percent, increasing the purchase price of fresh fruit by 70 percent.
