The grand premiere of the modern Peking Opera play Warrior – the story of a soldier famous for decades for his outstanding military achievements – was held on May 12 in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, according to local media reports.

The new opera – whose season stretches through June – is based on the story of Hu Zhaofu, a 95-year-old Party member from Changshan county in Quzhou city, situated in western Zhejiang.

At the age of 15, Hu participated in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) – taking part in 46 battles and winning 26 medals, including a raft of meritorious services awards.

"He is a true hero and a true warrior," said Weng Guosheng, director of the opera, adding that he spent his life doing one single thing – saving lives.

"Even now, at the age of 95, he's still pursuing his goal," Weng added. "He has experienced life and death situations countless times and has a more profound understanding of life than the average person. This is a life with high spirit."

Evocative space, time settings enhance storyline

A full range of innovative and imaginative stage effects – involving stage designs, lighting designs and costumes – reportedly guarantees that the opera's season will offer audiences multidimensional space and time settings, to enhance its vivid storytelling.

The introduction of a new drama structure – adopting flashbacks, by constantly setting switching techniques – is designed to thrill viewers. It regarded as a technical first in Beijing Opera.

The lead actor Tian Lei – a National Class-A Actor – has never before played a character with such a wide range of ages, moving from 16 to 95. During several visits in Changshan, Tian met with the old hero to conduct research into the part. He listened to Hu Zhaofu's stories and felt his emotions with his heart. The actor also carefully observed his facial expressions, steps and posture – to imitate his habitual movements and incorporate them into the stage performances.

120 performances to be performed

With the Party's 100th anniversary on July 1, the play is well-planned to present a stage masterpiece, tracing the period when soldiers fought for their country a century ago.
