Two scenic spots in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province were added to the list of important heritage sites under state protection released by the State Council on Oct 16, increasing the number of national-level heritage sites in the city to 16.

Among the newly added sites is Xianyan Cave in Qujiang district, which covers an area of 390 square meters and houses 39 pieces of stones with inscription on them.

Twenty-nine are engraved with dynasties, including the Tang (618-907), Song (960-1279), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, and showcase different styles of calligraphy, including regular script, cursive script, and seal script.

Most of the stone inscriptions were made by senior officials and renowned scholars and have significant historical and artistic value.

Another listed scenic spot is Wenchang Palace in Jiangshan county, which was established in 1888 and covers an area of 1,576 square meters.

Wenchang Palace is a treasure trove of historical architecture, paintings and carvings. It is home to 451 color paintings, including 71 depicting figures and literary allusions and 380 depicting landscapes, flowers and birds.

Two sweet-scented osmanthus trees stand in front of the palace. The trees were believed to bring good luck to those taking the imperial examination. One of them is as old as the palace itself and still gives out a rich fragrance to this day.
