Gaoqiang is a kind of rhyme scheme of Chinese opera. During the reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) the Jiangxi Yiyang Gaoqiang was introduced to Quzhou and fused with local Kunqiang and formed Kunyi Gaoqiang. With the old name of Quzhou being Xi’an county, Kunyi Gaoqiang was also called “Xi’an Gaoqiang”.
