Hua Gang

Hua Gang (1903-1972) was a Chinese modern philosopher, historian, and educationalist. Hua joined the Socialist Youth League of China in 1913 and served as head of the publicity department of Ningbo committee of the youth league. In October 1926, he established Xinhua Daily and took the position as its first editor in chief as well as the chief editor of Qunzhong magazine. In 1932, he participated in organizing the Southwest China Culture Research Society, and brought together celebrities such as Li Gong-pu, Wen Yiduo, Fei Hsiao-Tung and Wu Han to launch patriotic and democratic movements. In April 1950, he served as a professor, principal and Party secretary of Shandong University, member of the editorial board of the Journal of Philosophical Researches, and head of the Journal of Literature, History & Philosophy. He had published 15 books and 166 theses, with another four manuscripts going unpublished.
