Wanyao village, or Kiln village in English, in Kecheng district, Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, recently resumed its long-lost porcelain-making skills, according to local media reports.

Wanyao boasts abundant porcelain ore and its history of porcelain making can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

In 1957, the annual production of porcelain bowls in the village reached 3.6 million. Wu Honglong, aged 74, a porcelain maker in Wanyao, said that the village saw a booming bowl-making industry in the late 1950s with its products also available in other Chinese cities.

However, with outdated production methods, the bowl-making industry in Wanyan could not satisfy the market demand and therefore had declined by the 1970s.

In recent years, the national strategy of rural revitalization has rekindled the hopes of Wanyao villagers.

The village decided to revive its porcelain-making industry by gathering local craftsmen and searching for support from accomplished fellow villagers.

The village's first move was to transform an obsolete school into a porcelain-making workshop where peasant painters and craftsmen drew beautiful rural scenes on their self-made bowls and cups.

In addition to bowls, porcelain makers in Wanyao now also make porcelain cups, vases, figurines and other items.
