Longyou Economic Development Zone in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, was recently identified as a national green park, making it the third of its kind in Zhejiang, according to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The concept of a green park is an industrial park which focuses on conserving resources and operates in an eco-friendly way in park planning, management, industrial chain designs and energy utilization.

With an area of 9.7 square kilometers, Longyou Economic Development Zone was a provincial-level development zone and also a manufacturing base of specialty paper in China.

Last year the zone's industrial companies above a designated size yielded 13.89 billion yuan ($1.96 billion) in sales.

In recent years, local authorities have stressed the importance of a recycling economy and the green development of industrial parks.

At present, more than 30 companies in the Longyou zone have passed clean production audits and 17 companies have obtained the honorary title of provincial water saving enterprises.

Officials say industrial upgrades of specialty paper manufacturers are the key. These were encouraged to recycle their waste, increase water use efficiency and to dispose their sludge in a harmless way in order to restore Longyou's clean water and blue skies.
